Japanese Side-bound Books

  • Verge Center for the Arts 625 S ST. SACRAMENTO, CA 95811 (map)

The Japanese sidestitch, or stab binding, became popular in the 14th century. We will bind three Japanese-style books in a basic stab binding pattern, a tortoise shell binding pattern, and a hemp pattern. We will learn to pierce sewing stations and bind or sew the book. The final products make beautiful gifts or journals.

You will need a bone folder, awl, needle, X-acto knife, ruler, cutting mat, scissors, and pencil (if you do not already have these the instructor will have them available for you to borrow). Price is $65 for Verge Members (Price includes a $10 materials fee.).
